Managers working in organisations with a diverse workforce and/or customer customer base who need to support their work by developing their awareness of diversity and equal opportunities.


The course can be easily tailored to incorporate your organisation's diversity and equality policies and procedures, and can also be adapted to meet the particular needs of public sector organisations.

Objectives

Define what is meant in practice by "equal opportunities" and "diversity" in the workplace.


Identiy some of the key benefits to you and your organisation of having a positive approach to equality and diversity.


Identify common stereotypes and explain the impact they can have on individuals and organisations.

Identify the key UK equal opportunities legislation and its main implications for you and your organisation.

Define what is meant by direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation - identifying examples in the workplace and beyond.

State the role of the manager in creating the right workplace enviroment.

Explain the difference between bullying and firm and fair management. Demonstrate appropiate and assertive ways of challenging inappropriate beaviour.

Identify your organisations process for handling equal opportunities complaints and your role in this.

Course Content

This is an interactive course that uses and appropiate balance of challenge and support to enable participants to gain the knowledge and skills they need to effectively manage diversity and equality in the workplace. Videos and case studies are used to bring concepts and relate them to the workplace.

• What do we mean by "diversity" and "equality" in the workplace?

• The benefits to you, your team and organisation of managing diversity and equality effectively.

• Stereotypes, prejudice and how our beliefs affect our behaviour.

Recognising the importance of difference - avoiding "right-handed thinking".

• Key concepts of equal opportunities, including direct and indirect discrimination, positive action, harassment and bullying.

• Exploring UK equal opportunities legislation and local policy (if appropriate) using case studies.

• The manager's role in creating an enviroment that embraces diversity and ensures equality.

• Bullying vs firm and fair management

• Assertively challenging inappropriate behaviour.

• Handling complaints ( including local complaints procedure, if appropriate). Acion planning for implementation.
