13 weeks full time (260 hours flexi-study) with shorthand
9 weeks full time (180 hours flexi-study) without shorthand
*based on a 20 hour week
Course Content
A secretarial position within the medical profession is the best of both worlds for some - a responsible office job plus the satisfaction of being involved with people’s health and possibly even contact with patients. That’s why specialist Medical Secretarial jobs are very well regarded.
AMSPAR Successful completion of the Medical Secretary - Introduction course will enable students to take the AMSPAR Certificate in Medical Terminology Examination. (additional home study is recommended).
The skills required cover a wide range; from keyboard and typing speed; to total mastery of the most commonly used software; to knowledge of the necessary medical terminology. Shorthand is an additional option, if you wish.

Core Subjects
- Keyboard Skills –Learn how to touch type accurately, using the correct keyboard technique.
- Keyboard Speed Development – Develop your typing speed to improve productivity using graded copying exercises and time dictations. A number of stages are available of up to 70 wpm
- Audio Transcription – Learn to type from audio dictation using a variety of correspondence eg memos, reports and letters
- Effective Business Communication – Learn to communicate effectively in business – via letter, email, telephone and personal presentations
- Microsoft Word – Introductory and intermediate word processing skills to a good employable standard.
- Microsoft Outlook – Learn how to share, manage and schedule information electronically
- Medical Secretary – Introduction - Develop medical secretarial skills to include terminology covering a whole range of medical specialisms, using an AMSPAR (Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers and Receptionists) course
- Medical Audio Transcription – Learn to accurately transcribe medical terminology from audio dictation
- Teeline or Pitman 2000 Shorthand (optional) – Learn the complete theory of either shorthand system. This will enable you to take notes at speeds of up to 70 wpm
